As lawyers, we’re constantly looking for ways to add value for our clients. It’s a challenging and fast-changing business, which is why we have to be open to new ideas at all times. One concept that has gained some traction recently is the idea of “law new.” It’s not always easy to define, but it generally means offering legal services in innovative ways. This can include working with underserved communities or creating strategies that aren’t part of the standard practice of law.
How a Bill Becomes a Law
Congress is the lawmaking branch of the federal government. Learn how a proposal to create a new law is created, what happens when it’s introduced, and how the process differs between the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Providing notice regarding student loan forgiveness programs
This bill would require the Department of Citywide Administrative Services, in consultation with DCWP, to prepare a notice regarding student loan forgiveness programs for employees and job applicants of City agencies. DCWP would make the notice available to agencies for distribution to their employees and job applicants, and the bill would also require the departments of Transportation and Environmental Protection to provide the notice to employees and job applicants of those departments.
Requiring data breach notification for private identifying information
This bill would amend NYC’s security breach laws to align them with new requirements under the State’s SHIELD Act. Under the new law, City agencies that suffer a security breach involving personal information of persons would be required to notify the Chief Privacy Officer and Office of Cyber Command, and the NYPD if necessary. The bill would also require agencies to disclose the nature of the breach to affected individuals.
