The Daily News

The Daily News is a tabloid newspaper published in New York City, United States. The paper was founded in 1919, and at its peak was one of the highest-circulation newspapers in the country. The paper’s sensational crime, scandal and violence coverage as well as lurid photos made it popular. In the 20th century, the paper lost readership to rivals such as the New York Post and the satirical tabloid New Yorker, but it continued to publish local news. In 2017, the paper was sold to Tronc, which now owns the newspaper and its other assets.

In addition to national and local news, the Daily News also covers sports in New York. The newspaper’s award-winning writers, columnists and opinion formers bring you live coverage of Yankees, Mets, Giants and Jets games, as well as the latest in celebrity gossip and entertainment. The Daily News is the most read newspaper in New York City.

A digital edition of the Daily News is available for Apple and Android devices. The app features a scrollable layout that is easy to navigate and the ability to share stories via social media. The app also offers a subscription option to allow users to save articles for offline reading.

Each Daily News article includes comprehension and critical thinking questions. “Background” and “Resources” (including video clips, maps and links) are provided below the questions to give students a deeper understanding of the news story.

The Daily News was the first tabloid newspaper in the United States. Its original headquarters was in 220 East 42nd Street near Second Avenue, a distinctive art deco building designed by John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood. The building, now known as the News Building and part of Manhattan West, still houses the former News television station WPIX.

In 1928, a photographer for the Daily News strapped a camera to his leg and photographed Ruth Snyder being electrocuted in the electric chair. This photograph was the first time a person had been publicly photographed being killed in this way.

The Yale Daily News is the nation’s oldest college daily newspaper. It is financially and editorially independent of Yale University and serves the Yale and New Haven communities.
