Legal delivery is changing in many ways. It is embracing technology, changing processes and using new ideas to provide the help that some clients need. This is all known as law new. It is a concept that any legal firm can embrace to its benefit by defining a strategy that uses this approach. This is possible even if it also continues to focus on traditional areas of law practice that are the primary focus of that firm’s revenue and client satisfaction.
A successful law new strategy will involve identifying key client challenges and coming up with strategies to meet those challenges. The best strategy will be one that takes advantage of the capabilities and resources available to the firm to ensure that it can deliver the best value to the client. That may involve working with other firms or with companies that are non-lawyer businesses in addition to the firm itself. It might include partnering with government agencies to provide help to citizens who are not eligible to get the assistance they need through a typical law firm.
The term “law new” can mean a lot of things. It can refer to a specific way of practicing law that is different from the standard process used in most law firms. It can also refer to a specific type of legal work that is outside of the normal practices of most law firms. It can also refer to the use of certain technologies to improve the way that lawyers and their staffs work with each other and with their clients.

Law firms and in-house legal departments remain the industry’s dominant provider sources. But, while they routinely collaborate, they operate from different economic models, cultures, remits, and technology platforms. They are often not aligned with end-user needs and expectations. Law new will be characterized by integrated platform-based delivery structures from which agile, fluid, on-demand resources with verifiable, material expertise and experience can be sourced.
This will be driven by a data-backed, customer-centric model with an emphasis on output and net promoter score. It will be led by a team of professionals that includes legal practitioners, business analysts, “legal techies,” project managers, and allied legal professionals who are all committed to achieving the desired outcomes. It will be guided by a strategic plan that is focused on the delivery of law to legal consumers and society-at-large. That is how law new will make a difference. Not just as an internal efficiency initiative, but as a paradigm shift that produces meaningful change for legal consumers and the marketplace.
