The Yale Daily News

A daily news is a newspaper published each day that contains current events and information of interest to the general public. There are many different types of daily news, including newspapers that focus on politics and sports, as well as papers that offer opinions on important issues of the day. Some daily news is curated and provided by professional media outlets, while other sources of news are collected from members of the community who submit articles to be considered for publication.

The Yale Daily News (YDN) is the oldest college daily newspaper in the United States and is published every weekday during the academic year when the University is in session. Founded in 1878, the YDN has been a major source of news and discussion at Yale for over 130 years and is the leading forum for students to publish their views and ideas. YDN alumni have gone on to serve in government, business, and education and include prominent public figures such as William F. Buckley, Lan Samantha Chang, John Hersey, Sargent Shriver, and Paul Steiger.

Each YDN article includes comprehension and critical thinking questions, found below the title of each story, that provide an opportunity to enhance reading comprehension and foster debate and discussion in the classroom. Each article also includes background and resources to help students understand the context of the story and further explore related topics.

Throughout its history, the New York Daily News has been known for sensational and often lurid reporting, as evidenced by the infamous 1975 headline, “Ford to City: Drop Dead.” The tabloid newspaper reached its height of circulation in the mid-20th century, when it was one of the top three newspapers in the United States. The News lost some of its luster with the arrival of the more popular rival New York Post, but the Daily News remained a respected newspaper that offered intense city news coverage and celebrity gossip.

In the early 2000s, it was struggling with declining revenue and competition from online publications, but by the end of the decade, it had rebounded. The Daily News had expanded its digital offerings to offer more live and local sports content, and it began to invest heavily in social media and online video. In addition, the paper hired a number of renowned journalists and started to win awards for its investigative work.

The newspaper diversified further with the purchase of WPIX-TV, which had the call letters based on the News’ nickname; and later, what is now WFAN-FM. The Daily News currently operates out of the historic art deco Daily News Building in downtown New York City.
